Depending the application, premium SMS can be charged to the customer's mobile bill in either of 2 methods - MO (Mobile Originating) or MT (Mobile Terminating) Billing.

MO Billing charges the customer’s mobile bill when they send the SMS or MMS. For example, if the customer wishes to download a picture of a pop star they can be charged £3 upon sending an SMS to the advertised number.

MT Billing charges the customer’s mobile bill on delivery of an SMS or MMS to their mobile phone. The charge is not dependent on the customer having sent an initial SMS. For example, if a fan subscribes to a monthly ringtone from a band site they will be billed when the SMS incorporating the ringtone download link is sent to their mobile.
