Example Scenario: Potato Crisp Campaign

A manufacturer of Potato Crisps wishes to promote sales and build brand awareness. Two crisp brands are selected for promotion using Mobile Phone Crediting. Consumers are credited either in the form of pre-pay funds, or as credit on a contract user’s monthly bill.

The campaign takes the form of an on-pack banner announcing ‘Every Pack Earns 40p’ and is featured on the packets for the two brands of crisps. Customers send a unique code to an SMS short code, both displayed on-pack, to redeem the credit. Alternatively the code can be submitted online

The nationwide SMS promotion is featured on tens of millions of crisp packs. The majority of participants are pre-pay mobile users, but contract customers are also supported.

Before crediting a user, the system checks that the user’s mobile number is on a valid network, before passing the credit request in the required format to the relevant mobile network. The participant is then sent an SMS confirming their account has been credited with 40p, with the credit usually applied in real-time.
